International Womens Day 2009

April 7th, 2009

Wow! What an amazing day. The International Womens Day event is a very special day in the Ballina social calendar. The event was once again a sellout, with 300 women enjoying a day of inspiration, motivation, connection and fun! The theme for this years event was women in education, and our speakers certainly delivered. Dr Jacqueline Boustany spoke to us about wholistic health and spirituality and managed to have an entire room of 300 women meditating. A local legend, Joan Pickup, kindergarten teacher had everyone entralled with her entertaining and witty story, and we were also lucky enough to have with us the NAIDOC scholar of the year, Dr Karen Martin, who shared her inspirational and at times emotional journey.

To top off a wonderful event, the Ballina Town Centre retailers put together a fun fashion parade. The highlight was the local firies, with their good looks and enthusiasm, the parade was enjoyed by all. The charity of the event was the relief fund for the devastating fires that took place in Victoria this year, and thanks to the generosity of all the attendee’s we raised over $500!

Over 90 members attended the Christmas Party which was held in the fabulous premises of Cafe 29 On Friday 1 December. Exclusive viewings of the Ramada International Hotel’s prototype room were showcased on the huge plasma screen television that Cummings Retravision kindly donated to the Chamber to run a raffle to raise some operating funds. Kim and Ken Fitzgibbons of Ballina Marineland were the lucky winners of the raffle!!

Northern Rivers Brewing Company provided Chamber members with the first ever tasting (all ten litres of it!!) of their fresh ale – a new product line (feedback was great) and canapes were circulated by the friendly Cafe 29 team. REX sponsored a Lucky Door Prize for a trip for two return to Sydney of which Maureen and Bill Coulter were the lucky winners.

The weather was gorgeous and it was a fun and frivolous night with members saying the party was a great wind down after a big year in Ballina.
